Sometimes I get so hungry all of the sudden that I think I`m going to fall over. It hits me, just like that. The same thing happens to my twin brother so I know I`m not crazy.

I feel like Audrey in `Little Shop of Horrors` (“Feed me Seymore”) and have taken to stashing protein bars in my purse and in the glove compartment. Although I`m not a fan of protein bars — they don`t really have a baked-from-scratch sort of flavour.

When I get that dip these cookies are the sort of thing that I crave. They have substance, flavour and a little bit of sweet.

If ever there was a breakfast cookie these are it:

  • Loaded with stuff that’s good for you they’re the sort of cookie you could nibble with your morning coffee or have as your mid-morning snack.
  • They’re picnic cookies and going-on-a-hike cookies, tasty summer fuel for your body.
  • They’re sweet, but not too sweet and have great flavour thanks for the orange zest, cinnamon and chocolate chips (a terrific combo).
  • They have bran cereal in them (although you don’t need to tell anyone) and a healthy dose of ground flax and whole grain flour.

Goodness cookies – healthy breakfast cookies

A recipe from my sister, and they really are called “Goodness” cookies.

Makes 24 cookies


  • ½ cup butter, softened*
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup Grandma Fancy Molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. grated orange rind
  • 1 cup whole wheat or spelt flour
  • ¼ cup ground flax (optional)
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1 cup All-Bran-style cereal
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips or dried fruit (or a combination of the two)


  1. Cream butter and sugar. Beat in molasses, egg and orange zest.
  2. In a separate bowl combine flour, baking powder, spices and salt.
  3. Blend into creamed mixture.
  4. Stir in cereal and chocolate chips.
  5. Drop by spoonful on parchment lined baking sheet.
  6. Bake at 350 F for 10 to 12 minutes.

*Healthy tip from a reader: Reduce the butter to 1/4 cup and add 1/4 cup applesauce

Who doesn’t love a good bran muffin?

That’s a bit of a joke — I know loads of people who won’t go near them. I’m convinced it’s because there are too many flavourless, leaden bran muffins out there.

Commercial muffins are the worst. (Have you noticed that when a variety of muffins are placed on a tray together the bran muffins are always last to go?)

I happen to love bran muffins because they’re filling and (usually) have lots of good stuff in them. My mom’s bran muffins were the best, the kind that you’d mix up and leave in the fridge so you could bake them on a whim. I used to dip into the batter because I loved the texture and the tanginess from the buttermilk and I was usually too rushed or impatient to wait for them to come out of the oven.

As muffins go, bran muffin recipes have great potential, which is why this recipe caught my eye. It includes whole wheat  flour, flax seeds for texture, a bit of nutmeg for flavour  and dried cranberries instead of raisins. I add the zest of an orange to give them a bit more zip.

Makes 12 generous muffins

  • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk
  • ¾ cup All-Bran-style cereal
  • ½ cup natural bran (aka baker’s bran)
  • 2/3 cup Grandma Fancy Molasses
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • ¾ cup whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup packed dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup flax seeds
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cup dried cranberries or blueberries
  1. In a bowl stir together the buttermilk, bran cereal and natural bran. Let stand 10 minutes then stir in the molasses, oil and egg.
  2. In a large bowl combine the flours, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, salt and orange zest.
  3. Pour over the buttermilk mixture and the cranberries and stir gently, just until combined.
  4. Spoon into greased muffin tins.
  5. Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes.

Alan’s ginger molasses muffins are light and healthy

I’m a big fan of muffins. True muffins, that is. Muffins that aren’t too cake-like but that have enough sweet to be satisfying.

And I love muffins that are light textured but still manage to be loaded with wholesome ingredients. (You’ll notice these have bran in them. But they’re not heavy as lead.)

That’s what makes these ginger molasses muffins so great. They’re wholesome and healthy but not too sweet. Just perfect.

Alan’s Ginger Molasses Muffins

(slightly adapted)

Make 12 regular-sized muffins

  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • ½ cup natural bran (or ground flax or wheat germ)
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. Salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1/2 cup Grandma Fancy Molasses
  • 2 Tbsp fresh grated ginger (or 1 ½ tsp dried ginger*)
  1.  Grease a 12 cup muffin pan and set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 F
  3. Combine dry ingredients in a medium size bowl and set aside.
  4. In a separate bowl beat together eggs, oil, milk, molasses and fresh ginger.
  5. Carefully add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir gently until just incorporated.
  6. Pour batter into greased muffin cups and fill 2/3 full.
  7. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes and remove when nicely browned.
  8. Loosen edges with a knife and remove from pan when cool.

*If using dried ginger combine it with the flour mixture.
