Chocolate molasses crinkle cookies recipe


  • ½ cup chocolate chips (the darker the better)
  • 1 1/2 cups plus 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup Grandma Fancy Molasses
  • 1  tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp boiling water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips, melted (for dipping)


  1. Line two baking sheets with parchment.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and cocoa.
  3. In another bowl beat butter and brown sugar until combined.
  4. Add molasses and beat until combined.
  5. In a small bowl, dissolve baking soda in 1 1/2 teaspoons boiling water.
  6. Beat half of flour mixture into butter mixture.
  7. Beat in baking-soda mixture, then remaining half of flour mixture.
  8. Mix in chocolate
  9. Chill if you have time
  10. Roll dough into 1 1/2- inch balls; roll in granulated sugar.
  11. Bake at 325 F until the surfaces crack slightly, 10 to 12 minutes.
  12. Cool and dip in melted white chocolate.

Makes about 3 dozen

    Just made a couple batches for playing it forward day…..this is April 2020…the world is in a Corona Virus epidemic and this is a very great “hello, how is it going treat“ for your neighbour.

    I made two batches of these at Christmas time; one batch with cloves and one without. The first try was without cloves, (because I didn’t have any) and the cookies were indeed decadent and delicious. I included the cloves in second batch, but I did not like them as well because the cloves seemed to take over all of the other flavours. I love these Grandma Molasses recipes!

    1. Hi Maureen, I’m glad you loved the cookies. Thanks for the feedback about the cloves. I’ll update the recipe to list the cloves as optional since I know it can be such a strong spice.

    Made these yesterday, THE BEST recipe I have ever used for this type of cookie. Easy and incredibly tasty! So good I made them again today . . . because I had too re stock my cookie jar!)

    I made these and they are to-die-for. I did not know it was Pay It Forward day. I did take a big bag of food at the Food Bank today, so I guess it’s my Pay it Forward.
